I hooked this up to my 100' wire over the tree that I work against a tuner and I was very pleased with the performance of the converter and DVB dongle. Every channel in the AM broadcast band was occupied, most of them readable, all the big stations coming in good, WSM, WLAC, WCCO, WINS, WABC, WCBS, WIND, WLS, WJR, 740 Toronto, many more.
49 Meter SW band was just hopping, R. Havana booming in, China Radio International, Brother Stair, Gene Scott's widow and the rest of the hucksters coming in strong.
75 Meter ham band was busy, this system is stable enough to tune SSB and CW. Even had NDB's down in the 200 Khz region.I don't think I could have chased down the parts and built this from scratch for $52. It's well built, well designed, and I had no problem figuring out that the toggle.
Lots of great reference sites out there on this TV dongle showing how to enable a truly broadband programmable receiver. (see.as a great starting point)NOT FOR RECEIVING TV IN THE USAIt works great with the current drivers and SDR# software on my XP desktop.
The antenna is very short so do not expect any serious performance unless using something more substantial. The MCX antenna connector is hard to find, but my next step will be to mount this in a small box and solder a cable to a BNC connector.
At less than $20 for the entire dongle package it would be crazy to spend as much or more on expensive connectors!Works fine on local FM stations and some Public service activity too. No success yet on 1.09GHz ADS-B signals, but that may require a better antenna. Way cheaper than a Funcube dongle. Other reviews complained about poor build quality, however that wasn’t the case with my unit. No solder balls or broken components, though there was some leftover flux from the hand soldering of the LED and IR receiver, but that was easily to take care of with an anti-static brush and some 91% Isopropyl Alcohol. There have also been some concerns over heat, which I share. NooElec could easily help cool the tuner and receiver ICs by simply soldering applying solder paste to the bottom ground paddles; the board already has the required vias, so I’m not sure why they don’t do solder themAt any rate, I took care of the heat issue by applying some two tiny 15x15mm heatsinks to the chips.
(You can find these here on Amazon; just search for “Raspberry Pi Heatsinks” and get the small aluminum ones not the larger versions designed for. This product is actually a very good purchase for the money. I only gave it 4 stars because the instructions are not with it, and you have download and figure out how to make it work. All in all, you need to order sma to whatever coax adapters you need to get to an outside antenna. I used sma to so239 adapters. With an outside antenna it picks up signals surprisingly well. The antenna that ships with it is useless unless you are just interested in vhf/uhf etc local transmissions.
I have listened to vhf, uhf and hf with no problems with my outside wire antennas. At present, I have only made it work with SDR# and HDSDR software. I think this is because it used direct Q sampling instead of an up-converter (you have to choose Q sampling in software to receive.
I have been shopping around for a Region Free or All Region DVD player to watch UK television that hasn't been released in the US on region 1 discs. I have a Blu Ray player so I didn't want the added expense of buying another Blu Ray All Region b/c the price differential is so great. I finally settled on this one. It arrived last night and I played a Region 2 DVD and then a Region 1 back to back. The product was connected and had a standard US plug (some of the reviews of similar machines made me leary about a converter being required) so it was set up in under a minute. I didn't have to change any settings for either disc, the machine recognized them immediately and started playing them.
It was great!! Anyone who wants the freedom to watch a movie or tv series. We have a small collection of RFID blocking devices including sleeves, cards, an RFID blocking wallet, and even other faraday pouches that don't really work. We know because we put my cell phone in one pouch and called it from the other phone. Finally, after reading stories from people whose cards were readable and phones rang even with such devices, we wanted better coverage. At last we found these. We got two; one each. They are sturdy on the outside and soft on the inside.
Really well made, for example, the threads that stitch the sides and interior can't be seen or felt outside or inside. That's quality workmanship! The faraday material on the inside runs up into the fold over top. (Only place you can see the stitching). When folded over, it covers whatever is inside, fully enveloping the contents.
